IDF Combat Veteran Condemns Knesset Debate Over Haredi Military Service Amid Torah Study Law Discussion

During a Knesset committee session on Tuesday discussing the Basic Law proposal on Torah study, IDF combat veteran Yossi Saharadi erupted in anger, criticizing lawmakers for their disregard of soldiers' sacrifices. Saharadi, who has witnessed the horrors of war firsthand, accused the Knesset members of disrespecting combat soldiers by focusing on the conscription of Haredim instead of supporting those who fought and were wounded physically and mentally. He described the lawmakers as acting immaturely and urged them to take responsibility for the soldiers who served, emphasizing the trauma endured by veterans and their families.

Saharadi recounted personal experiences, including the impact on his wife and the emotional toll on soldiers who visit him and others at night. He warned that the enemy is relentless and that internal divisions only weaken the country. His emotional plea highlighted the disconnect between the lawmakers' debates and the realities faced by combat veterans.

Meanwhile, the Knesset's legal advisor, Attorney Shagit Afek, indicated that if the Basic Law on Torah Study passes, Torah learners might receive benefits similar to those granted to soldiers, following a recent statement by the Housing Ministry's legal advisor suggesting equal land benefits for both groups. The coalition is pushing to pass several controversial bills before the Knesset dissolves.

In related political developments, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi sent a detailed letter to Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, a leading rabbinical figure in Shas, explaining the Communications Law. Rabbi Yosef responded by insisting on the urgent passage of the Basic Law on Torah Study and the Kashrut Law, linking their approval to Shas's support for the Communications Law. He stressed the primacy of Torah and the need to protect Jewish dietary laws, urging swift legislative action without delay.
