Israeli High-Tech Job Seekers Surge 112% Amid AI Disruption
A dramatic report from the Israeli Employment Service reveals a doubling in the number of job seekers in the high-tech sector, with a 181% increase among experienced workers. The data, led by Dr. Gal Zohar and analyst Yaakov Forman, highlights a fundamental restructuring of Israel's high-tech labor market driven by artificial intelligence and macroeconomic changes. The monthly average of high-tech job seekers rose from about 7,700 in 2019 to a record 16,300 in May 2026, representing more than 11% of all job seekers in the economy, up from 5.8% in 2019.
The surge in unemployment is closely linked to AI advancements, particularly following the launch of ChatGPT. Software professions highly exposed to AI technologies saw an 18% increase in job seekers, compared to just 3% in other high-tech fields. AI tools are replacing core programming tasks, significantly reducing demand in roles once considered the crown jewel of Israeli technology.
Experienced professionals are especially affected, with job seekers having over eight years of experience increasing by 181% since 2023, and those with five to eight years rising by 138%. This trend marks a shift from previous challenges faced mainly by younger programmers, indicating that professional experience no longer guarantees job security amid technological and organizational changes.
Looking ahead, the Employment Service forecasts that high-tech job seekers will continue to rise through the summer, potentially reaching nearly 19,700 in August 2026. A slight easing is expected by the end of 2026, stabilizing around 16,800 job seekers, still more than double the 2019 level. Meanwhile, the ultra-Orthodox sector shows notable growth in high-tech employment, with a tripling of workers over the past decade and remarkable achievements by ultra-Orthodox women in programming roles.
