Druze MK Akram Hasson Supports Basic Law on Torah Study, Defends Ultra-Orthodox Community

Druze Member of Knesset Akram Hasson publicly endorsed the Basic Law on Torah Study, emphasizing the essential role of Torah learning in the existence of the State of Israel. In an interview with Beni Titlboum on Kan Heritage, Hasson criticized the political motives behind public discourse targeting the ultra-Orthodox and religious communities, asserting that such attacks are not rooted in genuine concern for the country. He condemned discrimination against religious groups, stating that religious figures are respected worldwide and should not be marginalized for political gain.

Hasson highlighted that Torah study is a fundamental pillar for Israel's survival, warning that societies that have disrespected religious faith have faced destruction and problems. He described religious individuals as a blessing to the nation. Addressing economic criticisms of the ultra-Orthodox community, Hasson argued that budget allocations are often misrepresented, clarifying that the annual per capita funding is about 4,000 shekels, not monthly, and refuted claims that the community burdens the economy.

Regarding his political future, Hasson noted uncertainty about how members of the National Right faction will run in upcoming elections under their agreement with Likud. He stressed the importance of national unity and security, urging a focus on protecting the country and preventing baseless hatred amid external threats. Hasson concluded by affirming his unequivocal support for the Basic Law on Torah Study when it comes to a vote.
