Yoga Instructor Transforms Tel Aviv Apartment Into Vibrant Colorful Home
A 30-something single yoga and Pilates instructor in Tel Aviv commissioned architect and interior designer Roni Palikman to renovate his 78-square-meter apartment on Gordon Street. The apartment, which includes a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and workspace, underwent a complete overhaul to better suit his lifestyle and love of color. The renovation involved significant structural changes, including relocating the kitchen to where the bathroom had been and converting the former enclosed balcony into a shower area. The original apartment had a 10-centimeter step at the entrance and a wooden deck in the bedroom, which were removed and rebuilt to create a uniform floor.
Palikman focused on maximizing natural light and used different flooring materials to define spaces, such as gray tiles at the entrance and terrazzo-style tiles in the kitchen with orange stone accents. The design palette features turquoise, orange, and light blue hues, with custom carpentry elements like a built-in bench niche and specially painted cabinets to maintain a cohesive and organized look. The living room includes a turquoise velvet sofa purchased by the owner, complemented by gray curtains and a subtle gray rug to balance the vibrant colors.
The bedroom and workspace were swapped to accommodate the owner's needs, with the bedroom dominated by deep blue tones and fish-themed wall decorations, while the workspace features a striking deep yellow wall adorned with framed prints sourced from Etsy. The bathroom was also redesigned with a coral-colored cabinet, terrazzo wall cladding, and vertically laid green tiles in the shower, preserving a window above the door to maintain natural light.
During the renovation, an unexpected structural column was discovered, causing a two-week delay to redesign the kitchen layout. Despite this, the project progressed smoothly with good coordination among all parties. The final result is a bright, colorful, and harmonious apartment that feels spacious and uncluttered, reflecting the owner's personality and lifestyle.
