Real Madrid Star Mario Hezonja Intensifies Pursuit of NBA Return This Summer
Mario Hezonja, the Croatian forward currently playing for Real Madrid, is strongly considering a return to the NBA this summer, according to reports from BasketNews on Monday. Hezonja has a contract clause allowing him to leave Real Madrid for the NBA by July 20, with the Spanish club set to receive $850,000 in compensation if he exercises this option. The likelihood of his departure has increased notably following the exit of coach Sergio Scariolo, a figure Hezonja greatly respected.
Hezonja has previously attempted to return to the NBA but is now reportedly pursuing the move more aggressively than ever, attracting interest from several NBA teams. During the recent EuroLeague season, he averaged 13.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists over 23 minutes per game. Hezonja has NBA experience, having played for Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers before returning to Europe in 2021. His best NBA season was 2017-18 with Orlando, averaging 9.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
