Apple has stopped development of its highly anticipated new AirPods Pro model equipped with infrared cameras, a project seen as one of the company's most ambitious efforts to integrate hardware with wearable artificial intelligence. The information was revealed by the leaker Kosutami, who stated the project has been "suspended" without providing further details. This move is surprising given previous Bloomberg reports that the product had reached advanced engineering testing stages, with some Apple employees reportedly using active prototypes.

The AirPods, developed under the codename B798, were designed not for regular photography but to include infrared cameras serving as environmental sensors. These sensors would feed visual data to Siri, enhancing Apple's "Visual Intelligence" capabilities as it seeks to catch up with competitors in AI technology. Despite progress, the project faced early delays; Apple initially planned a 2026 launch but postponed it due to Siri's AI system not being ready for commercial integration. Additionally, supply chain challenges, including shortages of memory components and chips, further complicated development.

Product quality concerns may have also influenced the decision. Reports indicate Apple considered delaying the launch if the Visual Intelligence experience did not meet its strict standards.
