Israeli Delegation Assists Venezuela Earthquake Recovery With Comprehensive Reconstruction Plan

After a 25-hour journey, a 32-member Israeli delegation of structural engineers and Home Front Command experts arrived in La Guaira, Venezuela, to aid earthquake recovery following two powerful tremors on June 25. The earthquakes caused over 3,340 deaths, left more than 17,000 homeless, and injured around 16,000. The delegation's initial mission was to assess standing buildings for demolition or preservation to ensure safety and resume normal life.

Led by Brigadier General Elad Edri, the team quickly realized they could offer more extensive support and proposed a comprehensive reconstruction plan. This plan includes clearing debris, managing national and local communications, and advanced solutions for waste removal. Israeli experts established a back office in Israel to coordinate intelligence, engineering, and equipment logistics, mapping about 1,300 buildings ranging from 15-story residential towers to schools.

Despite the absence of diplomatic relations between Israel and Venezuela since 2009, the delegation received a warm welcome. Locals expressed deep gratitude, often shaking hands and thanking the Israeli team, who wore IDF uniforms and Israeli flags. The delegation also connected with the local Jewish community, holding a joint prayer and Shabbat meal.

The Israeli team continues to work closely with Venezuelan authorities, who are eager for Israeli assistance. The delegation will finalize its mission and return to Israel on Sunday, leaving behind detailed professional reports and recommendations. Ultimately, Venezuelan officials will decide which buildings to demolish, repair, or preserve.
