Spanish and Croatian Islands Top Europe's Best Island Destinations for 2026
A recent study by Saga Holidays evaluated 80 European islands to identify the top 10 island destinations for 2026, based on weather, food and drink availability, and green natural spaces. The ranking weighted green spaces at 45%, weather at 35%, and food and drink at 20%. Spanish and Croatian islands dominated the list, securing nine of the top ten spots.
Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, ranked first with a score of 95 out of 100, praised for its stunning natural landscapes, fresh cuisine, and exceptional sunshine. La Palma, also in the Canary Islands and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, came second with a score of 94. Madeira, Portugal, known for its ancient Laurisilva forest and UNESCO World Heritage status, placed third with a score of 93.
Croatian islands Korčula and Mljet completed the top five, scoring 92 and 90 respectively. Mljet is noted as a pristine Adriatic island ideal for active travelers. Other notable islands in the top ten include Mallorca and Gran Canaria from Spain, and Lošinj and Brač from Croatia.
In the weather category, the Canary Islands led, with Tenerife scoring 88 for its sunny beaches, followed by La Gomera and Gran Canaria. Italy excelled in the food and drink category, with Capri and Sardinia in the top three, alongside Greek island Santorini. Croatia stood out for green spaces, with Mljet ranked first and Korčula third, while Madeira took second place.
The study offers travelers a clearer guide to choosing European island destinations, highlighting a mix of climate, culinary experiences, and natural beauty. This ranking may influence vacation planning for those seeking diverse island experiences beyond the traditionally popular Greek and Spanish options.
