French-Israeli Athletes Honor Fallen Soldiers at Maccabiah Games
Since October 7, 2023, the French immigrant community in Israel has lost 45 members who fell defending the country. The French delegation to the Maccabiah Games, comprising about 160 athletes, has dedicated their competitions to the memory of these fallen soldiers. Each sport and participant carries the name and story of one of the fallen to honor their legacy and integrate their memory into the Jewish world's largest sporting event.
Michael Kendel, CEO of the Kaelita Association and captain of the French delegation, emphasized the deep connection between French immigrants and Israel, highlighting the sacrifices made since the war began. He stated, "This year, there is no separation between sport and memory. We come to compete but also to remember. Behind every medal and achievement are people who paid the highest price for Israel."
Kendel also noted that immigration from France represents a vibrant form of Zionism, with thousands annually choosing to build their lives in Israel, serve in the IDF, and contribute to the country's future. The commemoration of fallen community members underscores the shared destiny of Jews in Israel and the diaspora.
One honored soldier is Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Eliav Amram Avitbul, who died in combat in southern Lebanon on October 24, 2024. His father, Dr. Marc Avitbul, a physicist and entrepreneur who immigrated from France at 18, will participate in the Maccabiah, running in memory of his son. Marc shared emotional memories of Eliav’s dedication, including his secret kidney donation to continue serving in combat and his role as a platoon commander and community connector.
Marc described the family's grief and resilience, recounting how they strive to maintain joy despite the loss. He also revealed plans to establish a preparatory program to instill values of giving and leadership among Israeli youth. Running marathons has been a shared passion between father and son, symbolizing personal endurance and coping with hardship. The Maccabiah event thus serves as a powerful symbol linking the heroism of fallen soldiers with the spirit of modern athletes, reinforcing the unity of Israel’s past and present.
