Trump Administration Moves to Repeal Over 30 Gun Regulations in US
The Trump administration is currently working to repeal more than 30 gun-related regulations, according to a report by The New York Times published overnight between Sunday and Monday. These rollbacks are expected to restore gun ownership rights to individuals with mental health issues, ease oversight of private gun sales, and reduce efforts to combat illegal firearm transactions. Supporters of the changes noted that some regulations will revert to policies that existed prior to those implemented by President Joe Biden.
Biden had signed a gun control law following a series of deadly mass shootings, ending nearly three decades of legislative stagnation on regulating firearms in the United States. A White House official told the newspaper that the Trump administration’s policy reflects a commitment to ensuring all Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights. The official also accused the Biden administration of bypassing Congress and using regulatory processes to restrict gun ownership rights.
The issue remains urgent amid ongoing gun violence, highlighted by a tragic shooting in April in Shreveport, Louisiana, where eight children were killed and at least ten people were shot. The victims ranged in age from one to fourteen years old. The local police chief reported that the suspect stole a vehicle at the scene and was killed by police during a chase. The shooting occurred at three locations, and some of the children were reportedly connected to the suspect. The police chief described the scene as extensive and unlike anything most had ever witnessed.
