In parallel, US President Donald Trump marked the 250th Independence Day of the United States with a speech referencing tensions with Iran, claiming the US had effectively neutralized the Iranian navy. Following an announcement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office about a phone call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump, Trump told Axios that Netanyahu requested a meeting at the White House, which may take place next week after the NATO summit in Turkey. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the leaders agreed to meet soon in the US, though the meeting could also occur during the upcoming UN General Assembly due to procedural considerations.
Earlier, Netanyahu spoke to Fox News about the Israel-US relationship, denying any rift between the countries and emphasizing their close alliance. He described Trump as a president who acts in America's best interest and noted that while they agree 99% of the time, occasional disagreements are resolved openly. Netanyahu framed their relationship as a partnership between the free world's leader and the Middle East's sole democracy.
Regarding Iran, Netanyahu stated that Israel and the US share goals of halting Iran's nuclear program and shutting down enrichment facilities. He acknowledged Trump's belief that combined US-Israeli military pressure followed by negotiations could achieve these aims, expressing respect for this approach. Netanyahu also responded to Vice President Mike Pence's earlier comments by asserting that Israel has no closer ally than the United States, and vice versa.
