Bania Sarur Embraces Role in Israeli National Basketball Team After Injury Recovery

Bania Sarur, the Israeli basketball center, recently received his first call-up to the senior Israeli national team, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The invitation came from coach Ariel Beit Halachmi, and Sarur did not hesitate to accept. He made his debut in the national colors during a loss to Germany and is set to play against Croatia in the World Cup qualifiers. Sarur described the call-up as a major milestone, saying, "The national team is my dream. When Ariel called, I didn’t hesitate. I told him, just tell me when and where."

Sarur has faced significant challenges, including a serious injury during the 2024-2025 season while playing for Maccabi Ironi Ramat Gan. Initially training normally, he later discovered a major tear requiring a year-long recovery. He admitted the injury was tough to accept but believes it was ultimately for the best. After returning to play with Elitzur Netanya in February, Sarur now hopes this opportunity with the national team will open doors to top-tier clubs.

Balancing his professional career with his religious lifestyle has also been a challenge, especially during the recent training camp in Latvia that coincided with the fast of the 17th of Tammuz. Sarur, who attended a religious school until eighth grade and comes from a religious family, managed the fast with support from the team and local Chabad, which provided meals for him.

As the only natural center on the roster, Sarur acknowledges the physical challenge posed by taller opponents but remains focused on defense and effort, emphasizing the importance of aggression and commitment. Despite some key players missing from the squad, he stressed that the team’s mindset remains strong and focused on performing well regardless of absences.

Sarur also addressed questions about his playing style, including his preference for tight shorts and his ongoing work to improve free throw shooting, which he described as partly mental. He expressed confidence in his abilities and a strong belief that he belongs at the highest levels of basketball.

Sarur’s next game with Israel is scheduled for Monday at 21:00 against Croatia, broadcast live on 5SPORT, where Israel will conclude the first round of World Cup qualifiers.
