WHO Declares End to Hantavirus Outbreak on Dutch Cruise Ship MV Hondius

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the official end of the hantavirus outbreak that occurred earlier this year aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius. The declaration came after health authorities confirmed that the outbreak was fully contained, with the last exposed individual completing quarantine, testing negative, and returning home. Ghebreyesus stated, "No new cases have been reported since May 25, and therefore we are very pleased to declare this outbreak over."

The outbreak resulted in 13 confirmed infections, including three fatalities. Health efforts involved monitoring and tracking over 650 individuals across 33 countries and territories worldwide. Despite the official end of the outbreak, the WHO emphasized that surveillance and research will continue to better understand this event and the hantavirus in general. Ghebreyesus concluded by affirming the organization's commitment to working with governments and partners to enhance knowledge and preparedness for future incidents.
