Dairy Products Disappear from Israeli Store Shelves Amid Supply Disruptions

In recent months, Israeli consumers have encountered significant shortages of dairy products such as fresh milk, cottage cheese, white cheese, and yogurts in supermarket refrigerators. Major dairy producers like Tnuva, Tara, and Strauss have offered varying explanations for these unusual supply disruptions, leaving retailers and the public uncertain about the root causes.

Unlike previous shortages that mainly affected regulated dairy items, the current scarcity extends to more profitable products, including popular probiotic drinks. Retail sources report a sharp reduction in deliveries, with some strong-performing stores receiving only one or two crates of cottage cheese every two days instead of the usual eight to ten. This shortage has led to tensions between store managers and dairy company representatives, requiring intervention to calm disputes.

Discount chains also report a roughly 50% cut in dairy product allocations, prompting them to increase their orders significantly to meet consumer demand. Industry insiders acknowledge the lack of clarity regarding the shortage's cause, with dairy producers attributing it variously to seasonal factors, production glitches, or increased demand for perceived healthier dairy options. However, these explanations have not been fully communicated to retailers or the public.

Tnuva stated that it has increased cottage cheese production by 4.5% compared to last year, attributing the perceived shortage to logistical delays amid unusually high demand. Strauss emphasized that stock levels are regularly replenished and that any availability gaps are limited to isolated sales points. Meanwhile, the Israeli Dairy Council is set to receive new regulatory powers to better manage production and supply in response to these ongoing disruptions.
