Israeli Nail Artist Libi Podolitz Transforms Nail Art Into Personal and Cultural Expression
Libi Podolitz, a 26-year-old nail artist from Lod, Israel, overcame a childhood habit of severe nail biting by learning nail extension techniques during her military service. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to close her nail care business, she enrolled in a nail art course and began working from home, eventually joining a pioneering nail art studio in Tel Aviv. Podolitz, a graduate of Shenkar College's visual communication department, uses her artistic skills to create custom nail designs, emphasizing that nail art is a trendy, adaptable form of personal expression.
Nail art in Israel has evolved into a thriving industry and cultural language, with miniature illustrations, 3D sculptures, and designs inspired by fashion, pop culture, and social media trends. Podolitz has worked with celebrities such as Noa Kirel, Netta Barzilai, and Noga Erez, contributing to music videos and public appearances. She highlights that nails serve as an intimate reflection of one's identity and psychological state, noting the social stigma she faced growing up in Lod, where pursuing nail artistry was seen as a sign of failure.
Podolitz’s work challenges cultural boundaries and incorporates influences from marginalized communities, including patterns like leopard print, which she redefines on her own terms. She will present a live performance at the Jerusalem Design Week opening on July 9, where she will create and paint nails with a black seed motif symbolizing football culture, accompanied by live video projection. Her participation in the "Nails" group exhibition at Jerusalem's Shaham Gallery further explores nail culture's role in Israeli society.
Prices for her nail services range from 250 to 700 shekels, reflecting the labor-intensive nature of custom designs. Podolitz encourages clients to explore multiple nail artists rather than feeling loyal to one, comparing the experience to tattoo culture. Her approach blends art, design, gender, fashion, and popular culture, elevating nail art beyond traditional boundaries.
