Israeli Security Officials Advise Avoiding Gaza Escalation to Focus on Iran Threat

Senior Israeli security officials recommend avoiding escalation in Gaza despite calls for renewed fighting, emphasizing that Hamas currently lacks leverage against Israel. The military views Hamas as being at its weakest point ever, struggling to rebuild its military capabilities and focusing on restoring governance within the Gaza Strip. Officials stress that Gaza is not the primary arena of concern at this time, urging Israel to concentrate on threats from Iran, Lebanon, and the rising tensions in the West Bank.

In line with this strategy, the Southern Command is shifting to targeted assassinations and strikes against Hamas infrastructure across Gaza to neutralize emerging threats. While operational plans for a broader military campaign in Gaza remain ready, officials caution against hasty action, stating, "We are prepared if required, but now is not the time for rushed moves."

Concurrently, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) face a critical manpower shortage. With the Knesset expected to dissolve within ten days, the absence of legislation extending mandatory service or other legal changes could lead to a severe personnel crisis by January 2027, when thousands of soldiers are set to be discharged. To mitigate this, the IDF is preparing to issue "Order 8" to extend the service of soldiers nearing release by two months, contingent on imminent parliamentary decisions. The military underscores that this step may be unavoidable to maintain operational readiness.
