Israeli Security Officials Advise Against Gaza Escalation, Focus on Iran Threat

Senior Israeli security officials recommend avoiding escalation in Gaza despite calls for renewed fighting, emphasizing that Hamas currently lacks leverage over Israel. They advise leveraging Hamas's present weakness to strengthen Israel's strategic interests, while focusing on threats from Iran, Lebanon, and rising tensions in the West Bank. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) note that Hamas is at its weakest point ever, struggling to rebuild its military capabilities and governance in Gaza. The IDF's challenge is to maintain the status quo and prevent Hamas from regaining strength.

In response, the Southern Command is shifting tactics toward targeted assassinations and strikes against Hamas infrastructure across Gaza to neutralize emerging threats. Officials stress that Israel retains the privilege to choose the timing of any broader military operation, with operational plans ready for immediate execution if necessary.

Concurrently, the IDF faces a critical manpower shortage. With the Knesset expected to dissolve within ten days, failure to pass legislation extending mandatory service or other legal changes could lead to a severe personnel crisis by January, when thousands of soldiers are due to be discharged. To mitigate this, the IDF is preparing to issue "Order 8" directives to extend the service of soldiers nearing discharge by two months, contingent on imminent parliamentary decisions. The military underscores that this step may be unavoidable to maintain operational readiness.
