Egypt Unveils 'Octagon,' World's Largest Defense Headquarters Near Cairo
Egypt is inaugurating its new Ministry of Defense headquarters today in its new administrative capital, approximately 45 kilometers from Cairo. Named the "Strategic Command Center of the State," or the "Octagon" due to its multi-octagonal design, the facility is set to become the largest defense headquarters globally, surpassing the size of the Pentagon in the United States. Construction began in 2016, and the complex spans nearly 92 square kilometers.
The Octagon will house not only the army command and Ministry of Defense but also data analysis centers, strategic control hubs, telecommunications centers, an emergency events command, a weather forecasting headquarters, hotels, schools, prayer rooms, residential wings, shopping centers, and a hospital. This ambitious project is part of a broader military strengthening initiative led by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in recent years, during which Egypt has significantly expanded its military size and tactical capabilities.
The new headquarters aims to enhance coordination among various security agencies and state branches, modernizing and advancing the Egyptian military. This development reflects Egypt's ongoing efforts to bolster its defense infrastructure and operational readiness.
