Former Qatari Royal Boeing 747 Converted Into Temporary Air Force One for Trump
A Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, originally built in 2012 for the Qatari royal family, has been converted into a temporary presidential aircraft for U.S. President Donald Trump. The extensive modifications were carried out by L3Harris, a company specializing in military communication and security systems. The plane’s exterior was redesigned to remove Qatari symbols and display U.S. presidential insignia, while the interior was outfitted with luxurious spaces including a master bedroom, lounges, offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, some designed for work during long flights.
Beyond its lavish interiors, the aircraft was equipped with advanced encrypted communication systems to maintain secure contact with the White House, Pentagon, and global military commands. It also features threat detection, electronic warfare capabilities, jamming systems, and other classified defensive technologies to ensure operational continuity in emergencies. The 747-8 model is Boeing’s most advanced jumbo jet, measuring 76.3 meters in length with a wingspan of 68.4 meters and a flight range exceeding 14,000 kilometers without refueling.
This conversion comes as the current Air Force One fleet, based on older Boeing 747-200B models from 1990, nears retirement. Boeing is developing two new VC-25B aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, but delays have prompted the use of this converted 747-8 as an interim solution. The original aircraft was valued at approximately $400 million before conversion, with security and structural upgrades potentially costing hundreds of millions more. This transformation has turned a luxury royal jet into a highly secure, long-range presidential aircraft with advanced communication and defense systems, most of which remain classified.
