Chris Froome Announces Retirement After Illustrious Cycling Career
Chris Froome, one of the most decorated cyclists of his generation, announced his retirement from professional cycling at age 41. The British rider, known for his four Tour de France victories and seven Grand Tour wins, made the announcement on July 2, 2026, ending a remarkable career marked by numerous achievements. Froome also won the Giro d'Italia once, the Vuelta a España twice, and earned two Olympic bronze medals in the individual time trial at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games. In 2015, he was honored with an OBE for his contributions to British sport.
Froome has not competed since August 2025, when he suffered a severe crash hitting a road sign at over 48 km/h. The accident resulted in five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a lower back vertebra fracture, and a rare tear in the membrane surrounding his heart, which was successfully repaired during surgery. Reflecting on the incident in an interview with Sporza, Froome said, "Unfortunately, last summer's accident was not how I wanted to end my career, but I realized then that it was probably the end."
Born in Kenya to British parents and representing Great Britain since 2008, Froome spent much of his career with Team Sky, later Ineos, where he wore the yellow jersey in Paris four times (2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017). His 2016 Tour de France moment, when he ran after his bike following a collision with a motorbike before receiving a replacement, remains iconic. Froome joined Israel-Premier Tech in 2020 but struggled to regain top form after another serious crash in 2019. He was not selected for the last three Tours de France and parted ways with the team in November 2025.
Froome retires as one of the dominant figures in modern cycling, leaving a lasting legacy through his unique riding style and influence on the sport over the past decade.
