Switzerland Breaks 88-Year Knockout Curse, Advances to World Cup Round of 16
Switzerland made history on Friday by defeating Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to reach the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. This victory marked the first time since 1938 that Switzerland advanced beyond the knockout stage, ending a streak of seven consecutive eliminations in World Cup knockout matches over 88 years.
Algeria started strong and nearly scored early, but Switzerland took the lead in the 10th minute when Johan Mbeumo made a brilliant individual run and assisted Breel Embolo, who scored from close range. Switzerland doubled their advantage immediately after halftime when Algeria’s Rami Bensebaini failed to clear properly, allowing Dan Ndoye to shoot into the far corner. Luka Zidane came on late for Algeria but only touched the ball briefly before the goal.
Algeria attempted to mount a comeback with offensive substitutions but failed to seriously threaten Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Switzerland had a chance to extend their lead in the 81st minute when Denis Zakaria crossed to Fabian Rieder, who missed an open goal, marking one of the tournament’s biggest misses.
With this win, Switzerland will remain in Vancouver and face the winner of the Colombia vs. Ghana match in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. The match was officiated by Argentine referee Zhal Falcon and played at BC Place Stadium in front of 52,497 spectators. Switzerland’s coach Morat Yakin fielded a 4-3-3 formation, while Algeria’s Vladimir Petkovic used a 4-5-1 setup.
This breakthrough victory ends a long-standing Swiss World Cup knockout stage drought and sets up an intriguing next-round clash in the 2026 tournament.
