Trump Says Iran Agrees to Most US Demands in Hormuz Strait Negotiations

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday night that significant understandings have been reached with Iran regarding the assurance of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump stated that "the Iranians agreed to almost all the demands presented by the United States," referring to indirect talks mediated by Oman. These diplomatic efforts aim to persuade Tehran to abandon its demand for transit fees on ships passing through the strategic waterway.

The negotiations come after Iran effectively imposed a blockade on the strait during recent hostilities involving Israel and the US, causing global oil and gas prices to surge and unsettling energy markets. Since the conflict ended, Iranian officials have repeatedly expressed intentions to generate revenue by charging commercial vessels for passage.

Oman has formally proposed a payment model based on a private fund, similar to systems operating in the Malacca and Singapore Straits. Under this plan, shipping companies would pay service fees to finance navigation safety and route maintenance. The US negotiating team has accepted the proposal but indicated reservations that will be addressed in further discussions with Omani officials before a final agreement is signed.

A key leverage point for the US in these talks is the promise to release approximately $100 billion in frozen Iranian assets held abroad. Trump’s remarks highlight progress in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis and stabilize the critical maritime route.
