Turkish Foreign Minister Calls Israel a Burden on Humanity, Sparking Diplomatic Clash with Israel
A sharp diplomatic confrontation erupted overnight between Jerusalem and Ankara following a provocative interview given by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. In the interview with CNN Turkey, Fidan harshly criticized Israel, describing it as a burden that humanity can no longer bear and calling for international sanctions against it. He stated, "Israel is not only Turkey's problem, nor just President Erdogan's problem. These people have become a burden that human conscience, political systems, and economic systems cannot sustain." Fidan urged the global community to take a firm diplomatic stance and impose necessary sanctions on Israel.
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned Fidan’s remarks as clear incitement to genocide, accusing him of dehumanizing the Jewish people and employing language historically used by major oppressors. Sa’ar called on the civilized world and Turkey’s NATO allies to unequivocally denounce the call for Israel’s destruction.
Earlier in the same interview, Fidan addressed Turkey’s relations with the United States, noting Washington’s willingness to reconsider lifting CAATSA sanctions previously imposed on Ankara. He described Turkey as a key partner and stabilizing force, highlighting that the Trump administration is reevaluating its foreign and security policies amid competition with China. Regarding Middle East mediation efforts, Fidan warned of a high risk of broader escalation and emphasized that stopping the war is a race against time. He revealed that Turkey maintained intense communication channels and relayed messages between parties even during active hostilities. Fidan praised strategic cooperation with Qatar and Pakistan and mentioned that former President Trump acknowledged these countries’ contributions to the mediation process.
