Christian Leaders in South Lebanon Request Annexation by Israel Amid Hezbollah Threat

Christian community leaders in southern Lebanon have made an unusual appeal to Israel, requesting that their villages be annexed and that residents be granted full Israeli citizenship. This request comes amid escalating tensions in the region and ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, which the Christian leaders describe as the "real occupation." The area in question includes several significant Christian villages within the Israeli security zone in southern Lebanon, home to an estimated 20,000 Lebanese Christians.

Israel has firmly rejected the annexation request, citing its commitment to agreements reached with the Lebanese government in Beirut under American mediation. These agreements explicitly deny any Israeli territorial ambitions in Lebanon. Israeli officials assured the Christian leaders that while annexation is off the table, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will continue to protect them from Hezbollah and the surrounding Shiite population.

The request highlights deep divisions within Lebanon and underscores the growing alliance between some Lebanese Christian factions and Israel in response to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah threat. Israeli officials also view the appeal as undermining Hezbollah’s propaganda, which accuses Israel of intending permanent control over Lebanese territory. Until Hezbollah disarms, Israel plans to maintain its military presence in southern Lebanon, with the Shiite militant group remaining the primary reason for Israeli troops on Lebanese soil.
