Eleven-Year-Old Driver Kills Nine Buddhist Monks in Northeast Thailand Accident
Nine Buddhist monks were killed and eleven others injured when a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy struck a group of 34 monks in northeastern Thailand. The incident occurred during a pilgrimage in Mukdahan province, approximately 400 miles north of Bangkok. According to local police, the boy took the vehicle without permission, as the ignition key had been left inside. Eyewitnesses reported the truck swerved sharply before hitting the monks walking along a rural road in the Isan agricultural region.
The provincial governor, Worayan Bonarat, stated that five monks died at the scene, three more succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital, and a ninth monk passed away later in the evening. One surviving monk, Somphong, described how he jumped to the roadside and saw his fellow monks thrown into the air by the impact. A local rescue association released video footage capturing the dramatic moments of the crash. A nearby monastery has offered shelter to the survivors. Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.
