Yossi Elitov Explains Why Stopping Sinning Alone Is Not Enough for True Purity
Yossi Elitov, editor of the newspaper 'Mishpacha,' shared his insights in a segment on Kikar HaShabbat about the deeper meaning of repentance and moral cleansing. He emphasized that merely deciding to stop sinning is insufficient for genuine purification. Instead, a person must fundamentally change their attitude toward the sin until it becomes detestable and repulsive to them.
Elitov illustrated this concept by referencing the biblical command given to Israel before the war against Midian: “Bind the Midianites.” This directive was not only about physical battle but also about first developing a profound hatred for evil itself. Only after this internal rejection of wrongdoing could the external fight against it be effective.
By internalizing this approach, sin is uprooted from the heart, leading to true spiritual transformation. Elitov’s message highlights the importance of emotional and ethical rejection of sin as a prerequisite for lasting change, rather than simply refraining from sinful actions.
