Israeli Court Removes Custody From Mother After Toddler Dies From Severe Neglect
An Israeli court in Beersheba recently described a case of extreme child neglect as a "horrific saga" involving a mother of three whose two-and-a-half-year-old son died from severe dehydration and neglect. The mother, arrested in March 2024 after her youngest child was found dead at home, admitted to charges including negligent homicide and multiple counts of child neglect. The court ruled to remove custody of her two surviving children until a final decision is made in the main proceedings.
Following the death of the toddler, the surviving siblings were taken from her care and hospitalized in poor condition, showing signs of severe neglect and starvation. Currently, the nonprofit organization "Children at Risk" holds guardianship, and since May 2024, the children have been placed in foster care with prospects for adoption.
The indictment detailed severe abuse, including withholding food and water, ignoring the children's cries, locking them in a room, verbal abuse, and substance use in their presence. The mother and her partner reportedly called the children derogatory names and denied them medical care, including dental treatment, resulting in serious tooth decay. The children were also left in soiled diapers, causing dangerous infections.
The prosecution argued that the mother's actions demonstrated clear parental incapacity, justifying the removal of her custody rights. The mother's defense claimed her conviction was a singular past event and questioned the authenticity of her confession. However, Judge Shani Katz rejected these claims, emphasizing the ongoing and severe nature of the neglect that led to the toddler's death and endangered the other children.
The judge concluded that despite the severity of removing parental rights, the evidence was solid and exceptional in gravity, warranting temporary custody removal under Israeli law until the main case is resolved.
