Israeli Supreme Court Suspends Michael Rebilu's Appointment as State Comptroller
The Israeli Supreme Court issued an interim order on Wednesday suspending Michael Rebilu's appointment as State Comptroller until a final ruling is made on petitions challenging his selection. The petitions allege procedural flaws in the voting process, particularly breaches of ballot secrecy. The court stated that a judgment will be delivered "as soon as possible."
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the petitions against Rebilu's appointment. Last week, the court issued a conditional order requiring the Knesset, the Likud party, and Rebilu to justify why the appointment should not be invalidated due to alleged violations of voting confidentiality. The panel deciding the case includes Supreme Court President Isaac Amit, Deputy President Noam Solberg, and Justices Daphne Barak-Erez, Gila Kanfi-Steinitz, and Ruth Ronen.
During the previous hearing, the court emphasized that the core issue is the integrity of the voting procedure, which was reportedly compromised by footage of voting slips, rather than potential conflicts of interest involving Rebilu, who represents Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in various legal cases. President Amit explained that the first round of voting in the Knesset ended without a decision, and Rebilu was elected in a subsequent round. The petitions raised two main concerns: breaches of ballot secrecy and conflicts of interest. The court considered proposing a new, proper election process, but this was rejected.
Consequently, the court expanded the panel to five judges and focused solely on the secrecy of the vote, explicitly excluding other claims from the current deliberations. The interim injunction prevents Rebilu from assuming office until the court resolves the issues surrounding the voting procedure.
