Snake Catcher's TV Appearance Leads to Thyroid Nodule Discovery After Doctor's Call
Shira Saadon, a 29-year-old snake catcher from Kiryat Gat, appeared on the Israeli TV program "You Must Read This" on Kan 11 to discuss her work and public education about snakes. The day after the broadcast, she received an unexpected phone call from the show's producer conveying a message from a senior ENT professor who had watched the episode. The professor suspected a lump in Saadon's thyroid gland based on what he observed on her neck during the program and advised her to get a medical examination.
Initially surprised by the call, Saadon tried to detect any unusual signs herself but found nothing. The professor, Avi Hefetz, head of the Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology Unit at Assuta Ramat Hahayal Medical Center, recognized a neck swelling resembling thyroid tumors he commonly treats. Following contact facilitated by the show's production team, Saadon underwent an ultrasound that revealed a suspicious thyroid nodule.
She subsequently had two biopsies, but no definitive diagnosis has been made yet. Saadon is currently awaiting further medical decisions, which may include monitoring or surgery to remove the nodule. Professor Hefetz emphasized that most thyroid nodules are benign and even malignant cases generally have high recovery rates. He stressed the importance of thorough medical evaluation for any suspicious findings to determine the appropriate treatment path.
