Instagram Launches Premium Service Allowing Anonymous Story Viewing and Enhanced Features
Instagram has introduced a new paid premium subscription called "Instagram Plus," offering exclusive features and advanced content control. The standard Instagram app remains free and unchanged, but users who upgrade for $4 per month gain several new capabilities. One of the most controversial features is "Story Preview," which allows users to anonymously view others' stories without appearing in the viewers list. Additionally, Instagram Plus users can see detailed story rewatch insights and quickly search viewers to identify repeat watchers, potentially exposing stalkers.
Other enhancements include "Story Spotlight," which prioritizes a user's stories to appear first in followers' feeds for 48 hours instead of the usual 24, increasing visibility. Users can also send large colorful hearts that animate on screen when reacting to stories. The service allows creating multiple custom audience lists beyond the basic "Close Friends" feature for more tailored sharing. Instagram Plus users can pin up to six posts on their profile, customize their app icon from a curated catalog, and change the font of their bio to personalize their profile.
The subscription also enables direct posting to profiles or highlights without flooding followers' feeds. The launch has sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising the value and others criticizing it as encouraging stalking behavior. The Atlantic magazine called Instagram Plus "a new low," warning it promotes unhealthy obsession for just $4 a month. Instagram rolled out the service earlier this month, and it is already generating significant debate worldwide.
