Instagram Tests User-Controlled Algorithm Tools to Personalize Content Feed
Instagram is exploring new features that will allow users to directly influence the app's recommendation algorithm. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, revealed that the company is testing "Your Algorithm" tools integrated within the viewing interface, enabling users to update their content preferences while scrolling through their feed or watching Reels. These tools aim to let users specify which topics they want to see more of and which types of content to reduce, moving beyond reliance on viewing behavior, likes, and screen time.
Examples shared by Mosseri include a pull-down menu in the feed for customization and a pop-up adjustment window during Reels viewing. Instagram is also testing dedicated buttons below Reels videos that let users indicate if they want to see more similar content or less of it. Some of these features are already in testing, others are planned for future release, and some may not be launched at all.
The new capabilities leverage large language models to better understand user interests and translate them into personalized recommendations. However, the focus is currently on content topics rather than specific account preferences, meaning users can request more content on certain subjects but not necessarily increase exposure to posts from accounts they already follow. This initiative reflects Instagram's effort to make the user experience more personalized and give users greater control over the content they see, rather than being fully dependent on the algorithm.
