Israeli Defense Ministry Buys Advanced AI-Powered Radar Systems to Counter Drone Threats
The Israeli Ministry of Defense has signed a significant deal worth approximately 21 million shekels to acquire hundreds of advanced radar systems from the Israeli company Magos. These new radars are designed to provide the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ground troops with critical protection against complex aerial and ground threats, particularly advanced drones, which have become a major challenge on modern battlefields.
Magos, founded in 2010 and based in Rehovot, has adapted its technology specifically for the IDF's operational needs. The radar systems use continuous ground imaging combined with an AI platform called MASS AI, enabling detection and classification of threats with about 90% accuracy at ranges of several hundred meters. The system can distinguish between humans, vehicles, and drones in real time, even under challenging weather conditions, while filtering out environmental noise such as animals or birds.
The CEO of Magos, Aviel Kisliansky, highlighted that the system integrates radar data with ground cameras to provide a multidimensional real-time picture. These capabilities will allow IDF ground forces to identify threats early and respond more quickly and effectively. The technology combines optical sensors and radar to ensure full coverage even in low visibility.
This acquisition comes amid a growing global concern over drone attacks, which have become a central threat in various conflict zones. The deal enhances the IDF's existing multilayer defense systems and leverages proven Israeli technology to improve detection and response against evolving threats. Magos, backed by the Apcon Group, currently operates in over 70 countries and plans to expand into the large Indian market, with an annual production capacity of about 3,000 radar units.
The urgency of strengthening drone defense was underscored recently by the FBI deputy director, who warned that drone attack tactics seen in Ukraine and the Middle East are likely to spread to other countries soon. The new radar systems are expected to significantly boost the IDF's operational capabilities against these emerging aerial threats.
