Neurologist Warns of Deadly Meningitis Signs in Severe Headaches
Neurologist Dr. Amnon Mosk and Dr. Beibing Chen have highlighted the critical warning signs of headaches that could indicate meningitis, a life-threatening infection requiring urgent medical care. While headaches are common and often caused by dehydration, stress, or viral infections, meningitis symptoms demand immediate attention. Dr. Chen emphasized that meningitis can kill within hours if untreated, distinguishing it from typical headaches.
Meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. The bacterial form is particularly dangerous due to its rapid progression and severe complications. Vaccinations against bacteria like meningococcus, pneumococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae type B have significantly reduced severe cases.
Classic meningitis symptoms include a severe worsening headache, high fever, neck stiffness, and light sensitivity. Additional signs may involve confusion, extreme drowsiness, or a persistent purple rash that does not fade when pressed. Early stages can mimic common viral illnesses, leading to delayed treatment. Dr. Chen stressed that anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially if unvaccinated, should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Meningitis spreads mainly through close contact such as kissing, sharing drinks, or living in the same household, often from carriers who show no symptoms. It affects all ages but is more common in infants, young children, teenagers, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Experts warn that while most headaches are harmless, the presence of these warning signs necessitates urgent evaluation, as every hour counts in meningitis treatment.
