Israeli Defense Minister Warns of Imminent Iran War, Details Military Readiness and Lebanon Strategy

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on Monday that war with Iran could erupt imminently, stating that if Iran fires missiles at Israel, Israel will respond with overwhelming force. Katz emphasized that Israel will not tolerate missile attacks and has communicated this stance clearly to the United States. He revealed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been instructed to prepare for a "Blue and White" operation targeting Iran, with the military ready to both defend and launch rapid counterattacks.

Katz also addressed the situation in Lebanon, underscoring that if Hezbollah fires on Israeli communities, Israel will retaliate by striking the Dahiya district in Beirut. He noted recent discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S. regarding the complexities of attacking Dahiya due to American concerns. Katz stressed that Israel will not withdraw from southern Lebanon, despite challenges, and highlighted the destruction of Hezbollah’s infrastructure and the displacement of 200,000 residents from the security zone.

Regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Katz declared that Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and expressed support for diplomatic agreements if they prevent this outcome. He dismissed claims that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan might join a war alongside Iran, describing Turkey as not yet an enemy and emphasizing Israel’s continued presence in Syria to protect local communities.

On Gaza and the Houthis, Katz stated Israel will prevent Hamas from rearming and is committed to disarming the group. He acknowledged the Houthis’ recent missile launches but explained Israel’s measured response was based on threat assessments. Katz also revealed plans to enhance Israel’s offensive capabilities in space, aiming to become a global leader in space-based defense technologies, including powerful laser systems.

Katz’s briefing highlighted ongoing strategic cooperation with the U.S., including training Lebanese army units to counter Hezbollah and maintaining a strong Israeli military posture across multiple fronts amid rising regional tensions.
