Israeli Defense Minister Warns IDF Ready for Independent Iran Operation Amid Rising Tensions
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed on Monday that he has instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare for "Operation Blue and White" targeting Iran, warning that renewed hostilities could erupt within days. Katz cited two potential triggers for conflict: a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump or Iranian missile launches, stating, "It could happen as soon as tomorrow." He emphasized that while the IDF is ready to act independently in Iran, Israel will not interfere with the U.S. administration's approach toward Tehran.
Regarding Lebanon, Katz disclosed new data on the extensive destruction in southern Lebanon from the recent "Silver Plow" operation. He reported that nearly 100% of homes in the western and central contact villages were destroyed, with about 73% destruction in the eastern sector. Approximately 200,000 residents have not yet been permitted to return, and Katz warned that anyone attempting to return would be prevented.
Katz explained that halting the IDF's operations prevented further planned strikes against Hezbollah, asserting that linking the Iranian and Lebanese fronts saved Hezbollah from a severe blow, possibly even collapse. He reiterated the existing deterrence formula: rocket fire into northern Israel or border communities would prompt retaliatory strikes in Beirut's Dahiya district. Katz attributed the coordination between fronts to pressure from President Trump following a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which led Israel to stop demolishing buildings in Beirut and shift to expanding operations in southern Lebanon.
He also stated that the IDF will not withdraw from additional areas in Lebanon beyond two pilot zones unless Hezbollah disarms. Katz noted an agreement with U.S. Central Command's Admiral Brad Cooper to maintain Israeli presence in three security zones across Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. Furthermore, he revealed that the Lebanese army refused Israel's request to act against Hezbollah militants in the Ali Taher ridge, prompting the IDF to continue operations there, including plans to destroy more tunnels using approximately 500 tons of explosives in the Bofor ridge area.
