It is doubtful that anyone among New York Knicks fans who arrived last night, between Wednesday and Thursday, at Madison Square Garden believed it would end this way. Mike Brown’s team was already down by 29 points in the second half against the San Antonio Spurs, but produced the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, won 107-106 and took a priceless 3-1 lead, putting them one win away from their first championship ring since 1973.
The man credited with the historic achievement is OG Anunoby, with 33 points and 7 of 9 from three-point range, who corrected Josh Hart’s missed layup with a critical tip-in two seconds before the end. After the game, the heroes in white, blue and orange did not try to hold back the tears and excitement.
Josh Hart, who could have become the tragic figure of the night after a miss that almost proved costly, sent a huge hug to his teammate: “I have a very special thanks to OG because he just saved me. At least for this game, he saved me from a lifetime of regret.”
