Michigan Parents Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Son Dies from Extreme Neglect and Obesity
Damian and Jessica O'Brien, a couple from Michigan, have been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture following the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper, who suffered from severe neglect and morbid obesity. Emergency responders were called to the family home after Casper stopped breathing. Authorities found him bedridden, nonverbal, and living in extremely poor conditions. Casper weighed approximately 116 kilograms (256 pounds) at the time of his death.
Casper's death was officially ruled as caused by cardiomyopathy worsened by his morbid obesity. District Attorney David Leyton described the home conditions as so dire that police officers were unable to enter to assist medical personnel. Leyton highlighted the parents' neglect by noting that they had called a veterinarian for their sick dog the same morning but failed to seek medical care for their children, calling the situation "simply illogical."
Additionally, Casper's 5-year-old sister was removed from the home by child welfare authorities and placed in temporary foster care. The case has drawn significant attention due to the extreme neglect and tragic outcome of the young boy's death.
