Garden Miracle: Knicks Rally From 29 Down to Win NBA Finals Game at the Buzzer
The New York Knicks looked headed for serious trouble in the NBA Finals, but at Madison Square Garden this season nothing is over until it is over. The Knicks came back tonight from a 29-point deficit in the fourth quarter, completed a huge turnaround in the final minute and beat San Antonio 107-106 to take a 3-1 lead in the series. The Knicks trailed by 29 at home, the largest deficit in Finals history.
Jalen Brunson was New York’s man in the biggest moments. The excellent guard finished with 36 points, took responsibility time and again in crunch time and led the late run that brought the Knicks back from the brink. Alongside him, O.G. Anunoby delivered one of his biggest games of the playoffs with 31 points, and was there every time the Knicks needed a basket, a stop or another push against the Spurs’ pressure.
San Antonio was in control for long stretches and seemed on its way to tying the series. Victor Wembanyama turned in another strong performance with 24 points. The comeback was completed only in the final minute, when Brunson made a big basket that put New York ahead for the first time since the opening stages. From there, the Knicks did not look back. Defensive stops, big rebounds and composure at the line completed one of the club’s greatest wins in recent years.
After 13 straight playoff wins, the Knicks were close to suffering a painful home loss that would have changed the entire series. Instead, they walked away with a victory that could become the defining moment of the Finals. Now they are one win away from their first championship since 1973, and in Madison Square Garden it already feels as though history is closer than ever.
