Austrian Striker Klaidžič Scores Crucial Equalizer After Injury Struggles
Sasa Klaidžič, the towering Austrian forward once hailed as a major football prospect, scored a vital equalizing goal for Austria in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Algeria at the 2026 World Cup. This goal, netted less than a minute after entering the match, helped keep Austria's hopes alive in the tournament.
Klaidžič's career has been marked by both promise and misfortune. After impressing at Admira Wacker, he was signed by Stuttgart in 2019 for six million euros and quickly made an impact, scoring 16 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances during the 2020/21 season. His performance placed him among top scorers behind stars like Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.
This success led Wolverhampton Wanderers to invest 18 million euros in Klaidžič, but shortly after joining, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during his debut, sidelining him for the entire 2022/23 season. A loan spell at Eintracht Frankfurt was cut short by another ACL injury, keeping him out for over a year. Overall, Klaidžič has made only 16 appearances for Wolves since signing nearly four years ago.
Last season, a loan to LASK Linz allowed him to regain confidence, scoring seven goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions. Now, with his crucial World Cup goal, Klaidžič appears to be on the path to reviving his career and fulfilling the potential that once made him Austria's hopeful successor to Marco Arnautović.
