Parents from Rahat Held After Injured Baby Taken to Hospital

A couple from Rahat were arrested on suspicion of abusing their infant after he was brought to hospital with bruises and needing medical treatment. Police said their investigation indicated the baby arrived with signs of being struck.

The parents were brought on Friday to the Beersheba Magistrate's Court for a hearing to extend their detention. According to the police remand request, the suspicion is abuse of a helpless person.

The parents deny the allegations and say the baby fell from his bed. Their lawyer, Amit Weitzman, called it a wrongful arrest and said it was not reasonable to conclude that any injury to an infant means the parents harmed him. He said, “According to the parents, the child fell from his bed, and that is what happened.”
