The Knesset’s legal adviser, attorney Sagit Afik, sent a letter to the House Committee saying there is a legal difficulty with transferring the Basic Law on Torah study from the Constitution Committee to the House Committee.
According to the letter, the bill was originally supposed to be debated in the Constitution Committee, but it was moved to the House Committee instead. Afik said this change creates an additional procedural problem because the legal adviser who was expected to take part in the House Committee discussions will not be able to join the Constitution Committee deliberations.
The warning points to a possible complication in handling the bill’s committee stage, though no decision on the legislation itself was reported in the note.
