A serious traffic accident occurred Thursday on Route 40 near the Yarkon Interchange, when two vehicles collided and one overturned. A man about 55 years old was trapped in the overturned car, suffered a severe head injury, and was evacuated to Beilinson Hospital in serious condition.
Emergency dispatch received the report a few minutes after the crash. Magen David Adom teams arrived to find the driver semi-conscious in the overturned vehicle. MDA emergency medic Dror Klein said, "This was a traffic accident between 2 vehicles, one of them overturned, with body damage on its side. In the overturned car was a 55-year-old man, semi-conscious and suffering a severe head injury."
Rescue crews quickly extricated the injured man, treated him during the operation, and transported him by MDA intensive care ambulance. Klein said he was taken to the hospital "in serious and stable condition." Several other casualties at the scene were listed as lightly injured, received initial medical treatment, and were expected to be evacuated shortly.
Police opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The road was closed to traffic, causing heavy congestion in the area. Route 40 is one of the main arteries in central Israel, and authorities said traffic delays were expected until the vehicles were removed and the road reopened.
