State Prosecutor Amit Isman spoke on Thursday at the Haifa Conference for Law at the University of Haifa and said the rule of law is tested not in moments of consensus, but in conflict and disagreement. He said the law enforcement system, led by the State Attorney's Office, faces a dual challenge, on one side governmental corruption, sensitive investigations involving powerful figures and the technological revolution, and on the other social polarization.
Isman stressed that criticism of law enforcement is legitimate and even desirable, but said it must remain criticism and not turn into delegitimization. He also warned about a proposed law to remove the Police Internal Investigations Department, known as Mahash, from the State Attorney's Office.
On that proposal, he said, "The Mahash law raises significant concern."
