John Carney, the Irish writer-director known for some of the most loved music films of the past two decades, is returning to the big screen with "Power Ballad" (Hebrew title: "Pizmon Chozer"), a musical comedy drama starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. The film will open in Israeli theaters on July 2, distributed by United King Films.
The story centers on Rick, an overworked wedding singer who writes a song during a late-night jam session with Danny, a boy-band star trying to launch a solo career. When Danny unexpectedly turns the track into a huge hit, Rick sets out to claim the credit he believes he deserves as the song’s creator. Rudd plays Rick, while Jonas portrays Danny.
Carney’s return to the genre fits the style that made him famous. He broke through with "Once," which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and later became a Tony-winning stage musical. He then directed "Begin Again," "Sing Street," and "Flora and Son," all of which explored music’s power to change lives. He also created the anthology series "Modern Love," which was nominated for an Emmy.
Early reviews have been strong. The Hollywood Reporter called the movie "hits all the right notes... a little familiar, a little unexpected and wholly satisfying," while Variety described it as Carney’s "most compelling musical drama since 'Once.'" The Guardian, Collider, RogerEbert.com and Film Threat also gave it positive notices. "Power Ballad" is a 98-minute American-Irish production, written by Carney and Peter McDonald, who also appears in the film. Yaron Orbach handled cinematography, and Carney co-composed the original score with Gary Clark.
