Actor Joe Manganiello, known for "Magic Mike" and "True Blood," has disclosed that he spent seven years battling what he described as a “mysterious and deadly” illness. The 49-year-old said the condition left him with lasting physical and emotional scars, even though he looked outwardly healthy. He shared the story this week in connection with his upcoming memoir, Bloodlines, and in an Instagram video posted Wednesday, saying he kept the struggle private and only his closest relatives knew what he was going through.
Manganiello said he consulted “the best doctors in the world,” but none could identify what was wrong. He said the treatments made things worse, explaining that strong biologic drugs intensified his symptoms and triggered a chain of severe side effects for years. He also underwent major surgeries and intensive procedures that “disfigured” parts of his body and sometimes left him too weak to stand or walk. For months at a time, he said, he lived on powerful medication while enduring crippling chronic pain.
During that period, he began looking at his family history and concluded the illness may have been tied to his ancestry. He traced his lineage and found accounts of earlier family members who survived the Armenian genocide and also suffered from chronic illnesses. In his words, recovery required his “mind, body and spirit” to align, and he had to open himself to “extreme and unconventional” approaches beyond Western medicine.
The book’s October release will reportedly include shamans, pagan rituals, ancient myths, long-lost family records and spiritual renewal. Its synopsis says Manganiello’s struggle involved a chain of immune system diseases affecting his thyroid, digestive system, skin, lungs and eyes, along with chronic pain, life-saving amputations, an existential crisis and a prolonged fight for survival that left doctors with few answers. In a People interview, he called it “the hardest and cruelest time of my life,” but also “the greatest adventure” he had ever had. The book may also touch on his Hollywood career and personal life, including his 2015 to 2024 marriage to Sofía Vergara and his engagement last year to Caitlin O’Connor.
