“One in 755 men”: Hollywood actor Tyler Mane diagnosed with breast cancer
Actor and former wrestler Tyler Mane, 59, has recently received bad news, he has been diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, it is a common diagnosis, but while many women have to deal with the specific type he has developed, it is rarer among men, Mane has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mane told his followers in a video he shared this week, saying: “I’ve got bad news. I started chemotherapy today. One in 750 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and I’m one of them. Because it’s barely talked about, it leads to late detection and worse outcomes. I want to change that. Follow, share and like, and join me on the journey to kick this thing’s ass. People need to hear about it.” He ended the video with footage from one of his treatments, where he declares, “Fuck cancer,” while raising his middle finger.
Alongside the video, Mane wrote, “Yes, you heard right. I have breast cancer. And yes, it’s super rare. Only 1 percent of breast cancer cases are in men. Honestly, my first thought was to keep it a secret. I mean, it’s pretty embarrassing. But then I learned that men are more likely to be diagnosed at advanced stages, simply because they don’t talk about it and don’t look for it. In fact, all my doctors ignored it, and only because my wife pushed me to have the lump removed did I get checked early,” he said. “So let’s start talking about it! One in 755 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and if it’s caught early, it’s very easy to treat. It’s time to answer this wake-up call! Let’s spread the word!”
Yesterday, he shared another video in which he thanked his followers for their support: “First of all, a huge thank you to everyone for all the love. I really appreciate it. It’s going to be okay, I’m going to tear cancer apart. Thank you for being with me on this journey,” he said, and added, “We have to spread awareness. Cancer sucks, but if it’s caught fast enough, you can win this battle. Please like, share and follow, and help me spread the word.”
Mane, who was born in Canada, began his career in the mid-1980s as a professional wrestler and later moved from the ring to the Hollywood set, appearing in films such as the first “X-Men,” “Troy,” alongside Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, and Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” films. Recently, he reprised his “X-Men” role in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and appeared in the series “Doom Patrol.”
According to the Israel Cancer Association, based on Israeli cancer registry data, the lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000 for a man compared with 1 in 8 for a woman, and about 60 men in Israel are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The main risk factors are age, the disease is usually diagnosed in people 50 and older, family history, for example a first-degree relative who has had breast cancer, high estrogen levels, and genetic background, carrying the BRCA mutation, especially BRCA2, significantly increases the risk. Main symptoms to watch for include a lump or thickening in the chest or underarm, skin changes over the breast, such as redness, peeling or dimpling, nipple changes, for example a nipple turning inward or changing direction, nipple discharge, or sores appearing in the nipple and areola area.
