Former minister and Knesset member Michael Malkieli of Shas spoke Thursday morning on Kol Chai radio amid continued anger in the political system and among the Haredi public over the draft law and the protests surrounding it. He said the previous night’s clashes during Haredi demonstrations showed that, in his words, “our blood has simply been permitted.”
Malkieli accused the justice system of selective enforcement and said he saw severe violence in several cities by people who are supposed to uphold the law, but instead felt free to run over and beat Haredim. He added that when there was an incident involving harm to Kaplan protest demonstrators, it led news broadcasts immediately.
According to Malkieli, the judiciary has created a reality of “two states for two peoples,” meaning one sector is allowed anything while, he said, the Haredi public can be treated however others want. He also directed direct blame toward senior figures in Likud, though he did not name them in the quoted remarks.
The comments came as tensions remain high over the enlistment legislation and the protests that have accompanied it, with the Haredi street and the political arena continuing to boil over.
