Thousands in Montreal Bid Farewell to Michael Mizrahi, Coffin Due in Israel Tomorrow
About 2,000 members of Montreal’s Jewish community took part on Wednesday in the funeral procession for Michael Mizrahi, who was killed in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges neighborhood during a shooting attack. After the funeral in Canada, the coffin was transferred to New York for its flight to Israel.
According to the plan, the coffin is expected to arrive from New York in Israel on Thursday, and the funeral procession in Migdal HaEmek is scheduled for late Friday night, at midnight. Mizrahi, 68, was an Israeli resident originally from Lebanon.
Following many hours of uncertainty, his body was identified and moved to the Pfeiferman Institute. Local Jewish community members said the rapid release and transfer of the coffin to Israel was made possible by ZAKA teams from Israel, who worked with local authorities at the request of his family members living in Israel.
Meanwhile, the investigation in Canada continues. The hotel from which the shooters emerged remains closed and secured by police, who are maintaining an increased presence across the city. One of the gunmen was killed during the attack, and two others were arrested. Community sources said the local police remain shocked more than a day later by the scale and impact of the incident, while security forces continue patrols and heightened activity throughout Montreal.
