U.S. Central Command, known as CENTCOM, said it killed a senior commander in the Islamic State group in an airstrike in northwest Syria last week. The strike took place on June 19.
According to CENTCOM, the man killed was Ali Hussein al-Olaivi. The military said the operation was part of its ongoing campaign against terrorists who seek to attack Americans abroad or inside the United States.
The statement did not provide additional details about the target's role, the exact location of the strike, or whether anyone else was killed. CENTCOM presented the strike as part of continuing U.S. efforts to remove ISIS operatives posing a threat to Americans.
