The European Union has proposed a three-year military and civilian mission to advise and train the Lebanese Armed Forces, according to a document seen by Reuters. EU diplomats are discussing a possible operation that would also support Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces.
Any such mission would require approval from all 27 EU member states. The document, dated June 17 and circulated to member governments, says the mission would have an initial mandate of three years.
Its stated goal is to help Lebanese authorities strengthen territorial control and border security. The proposal comes as part of EU efforts to back Lebanon’s security institutions through both military and civilian assistance.
